FORT LAUDERDALE, FL -- October 25, 1999 -- New research shows that celecoxib is highly effective in treating the signs and symptoms of Osteoarthritis (OA) of the hip. At full therapeutic doses, celecoxib demonstrates efficacy that is comparable to naproxen.

The researchers, George S. Geis, William W. Zhao, Richard C. Hubbard, Emmett M. Woods, James B. Lefkowith, and Shawn Yu, of GD Searle & Company, presented these findings at the American Pain Society (APS) Conference in Ft. Lauderdale on October 22.

While the knee is most commonly affected by osteoarthritis, the hip is also frequently affected. Due to biomechanical and potential therapeutic response differences, OA of the hip is sometimes viewed as distinct from OA of the knee.

Celecoxib, a cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) specific inhibitor, has previous been shown to reduce the pain and inflammation associated with OA of the knee, but with reduced risk of adverse events associated with COX-1 inhibition.

In this 12-week study, patients were randomized receive either celecoxib 50 mg BID, celecoxib 100 mg BID, celecoxib 200 mg BID, naproxen 500 mg BID or placebo. Measured at two, six and 12 weeks with a visual analog scale (VAS) pain assessment, all three doses of celecoxib and naproxen demonstrated statistically significant reductions in pain.

All doses of celecoxib were well tolerated and gastrointestinal adverse event rates were similar to placebo. These data demonstrate that celecoxib is highly effective in treating the signs and symptoms of OA of the hip. At full therapeutic doses, celecoxib demonstrated comparable efficacy to naproxen in these patients.
